0207 Numbers
Phone Numbers with the 0207 prefix are exclusively tied to the Greater London area. Along with 0208 and 0203 numbers, they make up the three prefixes you may have to dial to reach a London phone number.
In the past, the only way to have an 0207 number was to own or rent a property in certain London areas, and be allocated a number by British Telecom. However, in recent years, certain telecoms providers have been allocated 0207 number ranges by Ofcom, the UK telecoms governing body, and if you wish to buy an 0207 number, you will be able to purchase one even if you are located outside London, or even outside the UK.
Many businesses purchase these 0207 numbers because a London phone number conveys a certain about of respectability, or alternately they wish to put across the impression that they have a London office or premises, when in fact they are based elsewhere.
