0800 Freephone Numbers are often used by sales oriented businesses in the UK to encourage potential customers to call in and purchase something. Because calls are free to the caller, the theory is that consumers are more likely to call an 0800 number rather than any other number range, such as 0845 or 0870.
The way 0800 numbers work is that they are either redirected to a business’s geographical phone number, or in the case of more high-end systems and some Voice over IP phone systems, the call is directed to a hardware switchboard and then routed to the correct department.
