0870 Numbers
0870 phone numbers are a national rate UK phone number mostly used by UK businesses who have support helplines and customer services lines.
They are also used by companies to project an established, national image. Despite the benefits of 0800 or 0845 numbers, most UK businesses seem to use 0870 numbers (to a lesser extent 0844 numbers). This may well be because they are national rate, professional looking numbers which are charged to the caller at national rate, and incur no incoming call costs to the number owner.
Currently Ofcom, UK telecoms regulator recently announced a coming end to companies being able to earn revenue from incoming calls on 0870 numbers. This revenue being over, it may well be that 0870 number providers will have to begin charging for diverting calls to businesses, so the future for call charges and call routing charges with 0870 numbers is unsure.
However, they are still a good bet for small and large businesses looking to obtain a professional phone number.
