Marketing with Phone Numbers Part 1 – What number?

August 2, 2008 – 3:17 pm

Used correctly, the right phone number can aid a marketing campaign, and increase returns on the campaign costs exponentially. It is all about using the correct kind of number to put across the right supporting image for your marketing message and brand.

It follows that choosing the right phone number for your business is extremely important, and should be ideally integrated into a company’s marketing plan at as early a stage as possible in the cycle.

In terms of the number range or prefix, some or the questions a company should be asking are:

  1. What is my budget for telecoms? Can we allocate marketing budget to getting the right phone number?
  2. What message are we looking to put across with our phone number(s)?
  3. Are we looking at a local or national audience?

The answers to the questions above will very much determine the type of number that will be purchased.

For example, if there is a substantial budget that can be allocated to the number, the company may well look at obtaining an 0800 number, where the company pays all call costs when a potential customer calls in. Depending on the size of the campaign, costs may be significant, but at the same time, response rates to marketing will most likely be proportionally higher, and customers may be more likely to place their trust in and buy though an 0800 number.

Looking at the next 2 questions, a company may decide to go for specific local area numbers, such as an 0207 number for London area, or another prefix specific to its geographic region. If they are looking to seem local, but also project an established, national image at the same time.
